Everything here is inside the city, within a few minutes of any of our homes. The public swimming beach is Nickel Plate; the pier and the boat basin are where people actually spend their evenings.

Beaches in Huron, Ohio

Huron has one public swimming beach, one quieter one, a pier that runs a full mile into Lake Erie, and a marina with free summer concerts — all of it inside the city and all of it a few minutes from the front door.

Two things catch visitors out. There is no lifeguard at Nickel Plate, and dogs are not allowed on the beach between 10am and 6pm during the season. Both are worth knowing before you load the car.

Beaches & shoreline in and around Huron

  • Nickel Plate Beach

    One Nickel Plate Way, Huron

The city’s 21-acre public swimming beach, with a long sandy shoreline and the lighthouse in view. There is a picnic shelter with grills, a playground, beach volleyball courts, a permanent outdoor ping-pong table and cornhole boards, and the beach is wheelchair accessible. Restrooms are portable and seasonal. The Paddle Shack rents paddleboards, kayaks, pedal kayaks, water mats and beach gear from the sand through the summer.

    • Dawn to dusk, Memorial Day to Labor Day
    • Paid parking, per vehicle
    • Volleyball, ping-pong, cornhole
    • Wheelchair accessible
    • No lifeguard — swim at your own risk
    • Red-flag warning system, May to October
    • Dogs not permitted 10am–6pm in season
  • Huron Pier and the Huron Harbor Light

    30 Main Street, Huron

The pier runs a full mile into Lake Erie and is open to the public year-round, dawn to dusk. It is bike- and pet-friendly and it fishes well in every season — this is the one piece of Huron waterfront that never closes. The lighthouse at the end is a 72-foot square tower built in 1939, still maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.

    • One mile long
    • Open year-round
    • Bike and pet friendly
    • No admission
    • Fishing in every season
  • Huron Boat Basin and Amphitheater

    330 North Main Street, Huron

A marina on the Huron River with more than 120 slips and direct Lake Erie access, within walking distance of the restaurants, the shops and the beach. The amphitheater seats around a thousand and runs free summer concerts and family events through June, July and August — bring a lawn chair. Dock reservations go through Dockwa.

    • 120+ slips
    • Free summer concerts
    • Seats about 1,000
    • Dock reservations via Dockwa
    • No glass or alcohol at the amphitheater
  • Lakeside Beach

    Lakeside — about 35 minutes

Worth the drive for one reason: lifeguards are on duty through the week in season, which no beach in Huron has. There is a gate fee between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and a separate fenced kiddie pool and splash park beside it. If you are nervous about an unsupervised lake with small children, this is the answer.

    • Lifeguards on duty in season
    • Fenced kiddie pool and splash park
    • Gate fee, Memorial Day to Labor Day
    • About 35 minutes from Huron
  • East Harbor State Park Beach

    Marblehead — about 40 minutes

Around 1,500 feet of sand with a bathhouse, restrooms and changing areas — proper facilities, which the Huron beaches do not have. Pets are allowed in designated spots. The park also has eleven hiking and biking trails and a lakeside campground. The beach narrows when lake levels are high.

    • ~1,500 ft of sand
    • Bathhouse and changing rooms
    • Pets in designated areas
    • Eleven trails and a campground
    • Narrows at high water
  • Vermilion Main Street Beach

479 Main Street, Vermilion — about 20 minutes

Swimming is permitted, there is an observation platform and a concession stand, and the replica Vermilion Lighthouse stands at the end of it. Chairs and umbrellas can be hired. The shops and restaurants of a walkable little town are right behind the sand, which is the difference from Huron.

    • Swimming permitted
    • Change rooms and restrooms
    • Chair and umbrella hire
    • Town centre behind the beach
  • Cedar Point Beach

    Sandusky — about 20 minutes

A mile of Lake Erie beach inside the amusement park, and the part most first-time visitors never find. Access is limited to park and waterpark guests, people staying at a Cedar Point property, and season passholders — you cannot simply drive up to it. North Coast Parasail & Watersports operates from the sand.

    • About a mile long
    • Parasailing and watersports on site
    • Park, resort or passholder access only
  • Lake Front Park

    Huron

A quieter public beach with Lake Erie views, a playground, a gazebo, picnic tables and grills, and wheelchair access. The Huron Farmers Market sets up here on summer afternoons, roughly every other week through July and August.

    • Playground and gazebo
    • Wheelchair accessible
    • Farmers market in summer

There is a gate fee there between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
