What is there to do in Huron, Ohio?

Huron sits at the mouth of the Huron River on Lake Erie, with a 21-acre public swimming beach, a pier that runs a full mile into the lake, a marina with more than 120 slips, and two state nature preserves within ten minutes in opposite directions. Cedar Point is about twenty minutes west, and the ferries out to the Lake Erie islands leave from Sandusky, about the same distance away.

It is a town of under 7,000 people in the Firelands, the western end of the old Connecticut Western Reserve, and it was a shipbuilding port long before it was a holiday one. What that means in practice is that the waterfront is working and public rather than resort-owned: the launch ramp is free, the pier is open all year, and the summer concerts at the boat basin do not charge admission.

Everything below is within about forty minutes of our vacation homes. Where a price, a timetable or a season date changes from year to year we have deliberately left it out and pointed you at the operator instead.

When to come

Huron through the year.

Named events rather than dates, deliberately — the city publishes its calendar fresh each year and a hard-coded date on a page like this goes wrong quietly.

Around Huron

What is there to do in Huron, Ohio?

Huron has a 21-acre public swimming beach at Nickel Plate, a mile-long public pier that is open year-round and fishes in every season, a marina with over 120 slips, an amphitheater running free summer concerts, and two state nature preserves within ten minutes. Cedar Point is about twenty minutes away and the Lake Erie islands are reachable by ferry from Sandusky in roughly the same time.

How far is Cedar Point from Huron, Ohio?

Cedar Point is about 12 miles from Huron, which is roughly a twenty-minute drive without traffic. Allow longer on summer weekends and at park opening, when the causeway backs up.

Can you swim in Lake Erie at Huron?

Yes, at Nickel Plate Beach, which is open dawn to dusk from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. There is no lifeguard on duty and swimming is at your own risk. A red-flag warning system operates from May through to the start of October. The lake is around 72–74°F in July and August.

Where can I launch a boat near Huron?

The Huron River Boat Access at 41 Cleveland Road East has a four-lane ramp with no fee for launching or for parking, and space for about 135 vehicles with trailers. There are public restrooms, and the fish cleaning station runs from mid-April to mid-October. The ramp itself is open year-round.

How do I get to Put-in-Bay or Kelleys Island?

Three ferries serve the islands. The Jet Express from Sandusky is the closest to Huron at about twenty minutes, carries passengers only, and runs roughly May to October. The Miller Ferry from Catawba Point is the only one that carries vehicles to Put-in-Bay. The Kelleys Island Ferry from Marblehead carries vehicles and runs year-round, weather permitting.

What is there to do in Huron when it rains?

The two indoor waterpark resorts in Sandusky, Kalahari and Great Wolf Lodge, are about fifteen minutes away and both sometimes sell day passes to people not staying there. The Merry-Go-Round Museum in Sandusky and the Thomas Edison Birthplace in Milan are both indoors, and Firelands Winery is open year-round.

When is the best time to visit Huron?

July and August for swimming and the full programme of events. September and October if you would rather have the place to yourself — the water is still around 70°F in September, perch fishing peaks, and HalloWeekends runs at Cedar Point. April and May are for birders rather than swimmers.
