What closes
Cedar Point and Cedar Point Shores. Nickel Plate’s beach services and the Paddle Shack. Most businesses on Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island. The fish cleaning station at the ramp, from mid-October to mid-April. A number of restaurants in town reduce hours or close entirely, and the local listings do not publish hours — so between November and April, telephone first.
What stays open
- The mile-long pier — dawn to dusk, every month, and the city describes it as a good fishing spot all year.
- The boat ramp — open year-round, though without the cleaning station.
- The Kelleys Island ferry — the one island service that runs year-round, weather permitting.
- Firelands Winery, Sandusky — tasting room, restaurant and gift shop, year-round.
- Kalahari and Great Wolf Lodge — indoor waterparks, fifteen minutes away, open all year.
- Merry-Go-Round Museum, Sandusky — year-round, but call for hours.
The winter-only things
Joseph Steinen Wildlife Area, 155 acres west of town, is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when there is enough snow. Huron Winter Fest runs at the boat basin in December with fireworks. And the beach has no dog restriction out of season, so the thing that is off-limits all summer is suddenly yours.
A word on ice fishing
It happens on Lake Erie, but ODNR’s guidance on ice safety here is emphatically cautious and conditions vary enormously from year to year. Do not go out on the strength of anything written on a web page months in advance — ask locally, on the day.
Day passes at both Sandusky waterpark resorts are capacity-limited for people not staying there and neither publishes pricing openly. Ring before you make the drive.
