Most people planning a Cedar Point trip search for hotels in Sandusky, because that is where the park is. It is worth knowing what the alternative looks like before you book.
The drive
Twelve miles and about twenty minutes without traffic. The honest caveat: the causeway backs up at park opening and again at close on summer weekends, so allow more than the map says. Going early is the answer, and being twenty minutes out makes that easier rather than harder.
What you get instead of a hotel corridor
- A 21-acre public swimming beach in town, with a playground, volleyball courts and a ping-pong table on the sand.
- A mile-long public pier, open dawn to dusk year-round, that fishes in every season.
- A free four-lane boat ramp with no charge to park a trailer — unusual on this shore, where most ramps charge for both.
- A kitchen, a washing machine and somewhere to put wet towels.
- Two state nature preserves within ten minutes in opposite directions.
The other things within twenty minutes
Cedar Point is the headline, but basing yourself in Huron also puts you about twenty minutes from the Jet Express dock in Sandusky, which is the closest island ferry; about fifteen from both indoor waterpark resorts, which is the answer to a wet day; and about fifteen from the Thomas Edison birthplace in Milan.
When Sandusky makes more sense
Being straight about it: if you are doing three consecutive days in the park and nothing else, staying on-site at a Cedar Point property gets you early entry and you can walk back for a nap. That is a real advantage and we cannot match it.
Huron makes more sense if Cedar Point is one or two days of a week, if you are bringing a boat, if there are small children who will want a beach that is not a theme park, or if anyone in the party would rather be somewhere quiet in the evening.
Cedar Point season dates and hours change every year. Check the park’s own calendar when you plan — the third-party listings go stale and we will not print dates here that might be wrong by the time you read this.
