Most Lake Erie ramps charge for launching and charge again for trailer parking. Huron charges for neither, which is the single best practical reason to base a fishing trip here rather than in Sandusky.
What is there
- Four launch lanes.
- Parking for about 135 vehicles with trailers.
- Public restrooms on site.
- A fish cleaning station — food-grade boards including ADA-compliant ones, spray hoses and an industrial grinder.
- Open year-round. The cleaning station runs mid-April to mid-October.
Timing, which is the real advice
The ramp is free, which means it is popular. Early morning on a July Saturday is a completely different experience from ten o’clock on the same day. If you have never launched here, go early the first time and watch how the lanes work before you are the one holding up the queue.
Licences and limits
An Ohio fishing licence is required. Daily limits and size rules are set annually by ODNR and do change, so check the current regulations rather than last season’s. We deliberately do not print limits here for that reason.
If you are not towing
You do not need a boat to fish here. The mile-long public pier is open dawn to dusk every month of the year and the city describes it as a good fishing spot in every season. No launch, no licence queue at the ramp, no trailer.
River Monster Tours runs ninety-minute and two-hour guided river tours out of Huron, booked online in advance, if you want to be on the water without organising a boat at all. Central Basin Bait, Tackle and Carryout at 910 Main Street has live bait, lures, rods and reels, and is on the way to both the ramp and the pier.
The seasons worth planning around
- Walleye: the spawn run from April, with shallow jigging. July is the strongest month of the year.
- Yellow perch: September and October, when the ramp is also quieter.
