The western basin of Lake Erie, which is the water off Huron and Sandusky, is the part people travel for. If you have never fished it, here is the shape of the year.
Walleye
Fishing opens with the spring spawn in April, when shallow jigging works. The fish are in close and you do not need to run far. It is cold — the lake is around 42°F — so dress for it properly.
July is the strongest month of the year. If you are planning one trip around walleye, plan it for July and accept that the ramp will be busy.
Yellow perch
Perch peak in September and October. This is the one we would point a first-timer at: the weather is still good, the water is still around 70°F in September, the launch ramp has stopped queueing and the town has emptied out. A far more pleasant first experience than a July Saturday.
What you need
- An Ohio fishing licence. Limits and size rules are set annually by ODNR — check the current regulations, not last year’s.
- Bait and tackle: Central Basin Bait, Tackle and Carryout, 910 Main Street, on the way to both the ramp and the pier.
- A launch, if you are towing: four lanes, free, 41 Cleveland Road East.
- Somewhere to clean them: the station at the ramp, mid-April to mid-October.
Without a boat
The mile-long pier is open dawn to dusk every month and fishes in every season. It costs nothing and it is bike- and pet-friendly, so it works as a morning walk that happens to involve a rod.
We have deliberately not named a charter. Our research could not verify a specific operator from a primary source, and we would rather say so than send you somewhere on the strength of a web listing. Ask us and we will tell you who guests have come back happy from.
