The sun low over Lake Erie from the Huron shoreline, with houses along the rocky point

Questions, answered

Eighty-seven of them — everything we are asked about booking a house in Huron, Ohio and everything we are asked about the place itself, on one page.

What do people ask before booking a vacation rental in Huron, Ohio?

Five of the thirteen homes take dogs, some of the private beaches are rock rather than sand and those homes say so, Cedar Point is about twenty minutes from all of them, and the person who answers is Marcy, who owns every one.

Those four are the ones asked most. The Eighty-seven below are everything else, grouped by subject and answered in the same words as the page that owns each subject — and every group links to that page, so the long version is one click from the short one.

If your question is not here, it is worth asking: Marcy answers her own phone and email, and the answer usually ends up on this page afterwards.

Booking and your stay

How do I book a vacation rental?

Pick your dates on the home you want and book directly here, or call Marcy on 860-796-7830. Either way you are booking with the owner of the house rather than an agency, and Marcy is your point of contact from that moment until you check out.

What is the cancellation policy?

It is set per home rather than sitewide. The terms that apply to your dates are shown on that home’s page and again before you confirm, so you see them before you pay anything.

What time are check-in and check-out?

Check-in and check-out times are shown on each home’s page and repeated in your booking confirmation. If the timing is tight against a drive or a flight, ask Marcy before you book — it is easier to arrange in advance than on the day.

Is there a minimum stay?

It depends on the home and the season. The beachfront house with the pool takes a seven-night minimum in summer and three nights off-season; the others are set individually. The minimum for your dates is shown on the home’s page before you book.

Which homes are pet-friendly?

Five of the thirteen accept dogs, and the terms differ by home: two take a maximum of two dogs with a pet fee, one needs a deposit and prior approval, one simply welcomes dogs, and the farmhouse on two acres takes horses as well. The other eight do not accept pets at all.

Do any homes have beach access or a pool?

Most of the homes sit in neighborhoods with private beach access on Lake Erie, shared by residents and their guests rather than open to the public. One beachfront house has a private heated in-ground pool and sand at the front door; none of the other twelve has a pool. Some of the private beaches have a rocky entry rather than sand, and those homes say so on their page.

Which rentals work well for larger groups?

Several sleep between nine and sixteen. The largest has seven bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms and the heated pool. Two houses for one party is often the better answer: three of the homes are in the private Rye Beach community and several more share the Old Homestead neighborhoods, so two can be within a short walk of each other. Tell Marcy the headcount and the dates and she will say which pair works.

How close are the rentals to Cedar Point?

About twelve miles from all thirteen — roughly a twenty-minute drive, and Huron is small enough that which house you pick barely changes it. Kalahari is seven miles and Great Wolf Lodge nine. Allow longer on summer weekends and at park opening, when the causeway backs up.

The thirteen homes

See all thirteen homes

How many vacation rentals do you have in Huron, Ohio?

Thirteen, all of them in Huron or in the private Rye Beach community immediately east of town. They range from two-bedroom cottages sleeping four to a seven-bedroom beachfront house that sleeps sixteen, and between them they have 43 bedrooms.

Which home sleeps the most people?

The beachfront house with the private heated pool: seven bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms and sixteen guests, with a seven-night minimum in summer and three nights off-season. The Crossing is the next largest at eleven.

Which of your homes are pet-friendly?

Five of the thirteen accept dogs. Two take a maximum of two dogs with a pet fee, one needs a deposit and prior approval, one simply welcomes dogs, and the farmhouse on two acres takes horses as well. The other eight do not accept pets at all.

Do any of the homes have a pool?

One. The beachfront house has a private heated in-ground pool at the back and sand at the front. None of the other twelve has a pool.

Can I bring a boat or a trailer?

Yes, at several. The Crossing is half a mile from Huron’s free four-lane public boat ramp, where neither launching nor trailer parking costs anything. Cozy Cottage has a 47-foot driveway, the Nickel Plate house parks four cars plus a boat and trailer, and the farmhouse has boat parking on its two acres.

Are the beaches sandy?

Some are and some are not, and we would rather you knew before booking than after arriving. The beachfront house sits on sand. Several of the private neighborhood beaches have a rocky entry and those homes are marked. Nickel Plate Beach, the 21-acre public beach in town, is sand, and a number of the homes are within a mile of it.

Which part of Huron should we stay in?

If you want the water itself, the beachfront house or the private-beach neighborhoods west of the river mouth. If you want a quiet community with its own park and you are bringing a dog, the Rye Beach community east of town. If you are bringing a boat, central Huron, near the free public ramp. Everywhere in Huron is within about twenty minutes of Cedar Point.

How far is Cedar Point from your homes?

About twelve miles, or roughly twenty minutes, from all thirteen — Huron is small enough that the choice of house barely changes the drive. Allow longer on summer weekends and at park opening, when the causeway backs up.

What are check-in and check-out times, and what does it cost?

Check-in and check-out times, cancellation terms and minimum stays are set per home rather than sitewide, and nightly rates depend on your dates and the length of the stay. All four are shown on the home you are looking at before you book — or ask Marcy and she will tell you.

Lake Escape Rentals

About Lake Escape Rentals

Who owns Lake Escape Rentals?

Lake Escape Rentals LLC is owned by Marcy Barkema, who lives in the Huron area and hosts all thirteen homes herself. The phone number and email address on this site reach her directly, not an agency or a call center.

How many vacation homes do you have, and where are they?

Thirteen, all of them in Huron, Ohio or in the private Rye Beach community immediately east of town. They run from a two-bedroom cottage that sleeps four to a seven-bedroom beachfront house with a private heated pool that sleeps sixteen. Most are in neighborhoods with their own private beach access.

Can I book direct instead of through Airbnb or Vrbo?

Yes — that is what this site is for. The homes are also listed on the big travel sites, but booking here puts you in touch with Marcy, who owns the house you are booking and answers her own messages.

Are your homes pet-friendly?

Five of the thirteen accept dogs, and the terms differ by home: two take a maximum of two pets with a fee, one needs a deposit and prior approval, and one is a farmhouse on two acres with a barn that welcomes horses as well as dogs. The limits and fees are on each home’s page.

Do you have an office I can visit?

No. Marcy runs Lake Escape Rentals from home in the Huron area, so there is no walk-in office. Phone and email are the way to reach her, and she answers both herself.

Does Huron require short-term rentals to be licensed?

Yes. Huron operates a transient rental programme under its city ordinance: every rental unit needs an annual certificate, a fire-department life-safety inspection is part of it, and the certificate must be displayed so that it is visible from the street with the owner’s name, email and phone number on it. The city also caps occupancy at three people per premises plus two per bedroom.

What is the best way to work out which home suits us?

Tell Marcy what you are planning — a beach week, a fishing weekend, a Cedar Point trip, a family reunion, a dog in tow — and she will say which of the thirteen fits and which does not. That is a faster conversation than filtering thirteen listing pages.

Getting hold of us

Contact Marcy

How do I contact Lake Escape Rentals?

Three ways, and all three reach the same person. Call 860-796-7830, email marcy@StayByLakeErie.com, or send the enquiry form on this page. Lake Escape Rentals is owned by Marcy Barkema, who hosts all thirteen homes in Huron, Ohio herself.

Who will answer my message?

Marcy. There is no management company, no agency and no call center between you and the house — she owns all thirteen and answers her own phone and email.

Can I call to ask about a home before I book?

Yes, and it is usually the fastest way to work out which of the thirteen suits a trip. Tell her the dates, the headcount and what you are planning, and she will say which homes fit and which do not.

I am already staying in one of your homes and something is wrong. What should I do?

Call 860-796-7830 rather than using this form. The form is for enquiries about future stays and is not monitored as an emergency line. In a genuine emergency call 911 first.

Can I bring a dog to a home that is not listed as pet-friendly?

No. Five of the thirteen homes accept dogs and the other eight do not, and that is not something we can make an exception on — it is how the houses are set up and cleaned. Ask about the five and there is usually one that works.

Can I book two homes for one group?

Often, yes. Three of the homes are in the private Rye Beach community and several more share the Old Homestead neighborhoods, so two houses for one party can be within a short walk of each other. Tell Marcy the total headcount and the dates and she will say which pairs are free.
